I Don't Want You to Read This!!!

Enrique Mora

The way we say things can hurt your Leadership Image and the Lean Culture in your environment.

Updating The Semantics is very necessary when we want to establish a good communication and have the best results.

If when you are talking to people you catch yourself starting your phrases with:

  • You have to …

  • You must not do…

  • I want you to…

  • I don’t want you to...

It is likely you may want to keep reading this… even if I don’t want you to…

I had the privilege to learn from the philosophies of Larry Wilson, Earl Nightingale, Napoleon Hill,  and Dale Carnegie, they literally changed my life for the better.

Some common teachings from these giants agree in the way you can really get people supporting you. And this is by switching the terms listed above for:

  • We need to…

  • Can you please help me do…

  • Do you think you could…

  • If we can/could do…

  • It would be very beneficial if we did…

  • It may not be good for any of us that you…

If you are in sales, you probably already know this first hand, but in many other activities, the sense of “Power by Authority” causes the communications to go wrong and the results go from poor to none.

We all can build a very strong rapport with our team if we are careful to utilize the semantics that will make them feel sincerely respected and motivated to collaborate with us. Here I remember a phrase that I always try to keep in mind: “Nobody likes to receive orders or commands but we all are always eager to cooperate and help.”

It is that fine line between Authority and Leadership that we have talked about in some other articles in our websites and magazines. People are all good, they all are willing to help, as long as they perceive that we really recognize their contributions and share the joy of success with them.

People are the most valuable asset of a leader.

I did not want you to read this, but you did, why? Because we always challenge the “I want you” or “I don’t want you.”

Just as Mr. Staples said… That was easy!
